Errant ListeningThe House of Onomatopoeia: A Sound Workshop, Lecture and PerformanceYang Yu-Chiao

Yang Yu-Chiao

Yang Yu-Chiao is an interdisciplinary narrative and sound artist from Taiwan, and a scholar of narratology with a focus on oral literature. Trained in piano and voice, Yang has developed a practice in solo folktale performance, integrating traditional storytelling with extended vocal techniques to produce experimental sound-based works. Their practice also includes visual–sound poetry, notably the ongoing series 䚻 (Ballade), which combines chalkboard writing with live vocal and sonic performance.

Alongside artistic production, Yang’s research and writing examine environmental acoustics and contemporary transformations in oral literature. Their essays have been published widely, and ongoing performance series, including Onomatopoeic Sound Poems and The House of Onomatopoeia, continue to be presented internationally in London, Paris, Seoul, and beyond. They have also maintained a long-term commitment to education in performing arts and free improvisation, serving as a teaching artist at the National Art Center in Taiwan since 2020.

Yang has previously held residencies at Le Projet Bloom (Paris, France) and C-LAB—Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab (Taipei, Taiwan). They have also collaborated with institutions including the National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts, Weiwuying (Kaohsiung, Taiwan); National Taichung Theater (Taichung, Taiwan); Typojanchi (Seoul, South Korea); Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei (Taipei, Taiwan); and Taipei Fine Arts Museum (Taipei, Taiwan), among others.
